PN4056 – SUMO BOT

WEEK 2

DESIGN BRIEF ANALYSIS

MAX MASS 1KG – This will be challenging as we will have to manufacture a chassis strong enough to push another SUMO Bot and withstand collisions but also remain within the weight restrictions. We must be aware of the mass of the necessary components (battery, motors, sensors etc.) and carefully select a material that will satisfy all requirements.

DIMENSION CONSTRAINTS – Max dimensions must fit within a 200mm x 200mm envelope. To cater for this, we will focus on keeping the base close to the max dimensions and the work upwards i.e. height. When deciding on dimensions we must take the center of gravity into careful consideration. Building upwards would possibly make it easier for other SUMO Bots to knock it over.

MUST COMPLY WITH RULES AND REGULATIONS OF COMPETITION – There is a list of rules available at http://www.robotroom.com/SumoRules.html

MUST BE AUTONOMOUS (PIC CONTROL) – Technology that is autonomous can respond to real world conditions without help. To cater for this requirement, we will be using a MICRO:Bit. This is essentially a pocket-sized computer, 70 times smaller and 18 times faster than the original BBC Micro computers. We must consider how our SUMO Bot will detect other bots and the outline of the ring. The most common sensors to use would be LDR’S and ultrasonic sensors, which we have experience in from other modules. We must decide what type of coding to use. The block method would be a suitable choice due to it simplicity.

COMPETITION AT END OF SEMESTER – We must compete in a tournament to see who’s SUMO Bot will win.

INITIAL CONCEPT DESIGNS

  • Tanya 17210097

My concept designs focus on stability. I wanted to focus on keeping the center of gravity low to make it secure. Instead of adding extra moving components etc. I wanted to stay focused on the brief – pushing the opposition out of the ring.

  • Patrick Gleeson 17235235

For my concept ideas i wanted to explore different types of designs that are quite different to each other. As my lab partner had quite popular design ideas i decided to investigate more unusual design ideas
